Chicago,
June 5, 2007 - Cook County Board President Todd Stroger joined Joseph
Mario Moreno, Commissioner of the 7th District, and John P. Daley,
Commissioner of the 11th District, to support a resolution at
today’s board meeting marking National Hunger Awareness Day. The
entire Cook County Board of Commissioners joined in supporting the
resolution, which declares June to be Hunger Awareness Month in Cook
County and June 5, 2007 to be a day to recognize hunger in Cook County
and initiate a dialogue to help prevent hunger every day of the year.
During presentation of the resolution, the board was joined by Kate
Maehr, executive director of the Greater Chicago Food Depository, who
brought the Board and members of the public up to speed on the state of
hunger in Cook County.
Nearly 500,000 individuals in Cook County rely upon food provided by
the Greater Chicago Food Depository, which distributes more than 40
million pounds of food each year through its network of 600 food
pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and Kids Cafes. The Greater Chicago
Food Depository is one of more than 200 affiliates of America’s
Second Harvest, a Chicago-based national network of over 200 member
food banks in all 50 states that moved to declare June 5th, 2007 to be
National Hunger Awareness Day. The group is working with partners
throughout June to raise awareness of this serious issue.
