Chicago,
June 5, 2007 - Cook County Board President Todd Stroger sponsored a
resolution today celebrating June 12 as the 109th Anniversary of the
Independence of the Republic of the Philippines, and recognizing the
week of June 10, 2007 as Philippine Independence Week. He was joined at
the County Board meeting by members of Chicago’s Philippine
Independence Week Committee 2007. The resolution passed unanimously.
The week of June 10 has been designated across the nation as Philippine Independence Week.
Filipinos were among the earliest explorers in the New World, landing
in America in the 16th century. Today, Filipino Americans are the
second most populous Asian group in the United States.
Cook County Government and the Offices Under the President employ the
largest percentage of Asian Americans of any government in Illinois,
with Filipino Americans comprising a substantial portion of those
employees.
