Below are answers to commonly asked questions and issues regarding the employment process in Cook County.

Where do I apply?
Applications are available at the following County Facilities during the times listed, Monday through Friday. All applications must be filed in person, unless otherwise stated within the job posting.

What are the Human Resources office hours?
The hours of operation for the main office of the Bureau of Human Resources at 118 N. Clark Street, Room 834, are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

When are applications due?
Applications must be filed NO LATER than 4:00 pm, on the posted closing date. All applications must be filed in person. Absolutely no application will be accepted by mail or any electronic format.

What is a 'promotional' job?
Some positions are listed as 'promotional' on the posting. In cases of promotion and transfer, County employees shall have first preference in the order of their department seniority, provided that the employee has the ability and qualifications to perform the required work.
Applications for promotional positions are available only to current Cook County employees.

Is there a Residency Requirement?
All non-union employees who resided in Cook County on or before December 20, 2000 and all new employees hired into non-union positions after December 20, 2000, are required to follow the Cook County Personnel Residence Requirement Ordinance. Any new non-union employees shall have six (6) months from date of hire to establish actual residency within Cook County.

What is the status of my application?

How long do I retain my eligibility status after I apply?
Applicants will remain eligible for title applied for at a maximum of 12 months.

How do I notify the County of of address and phone changes after I apply?
If changes to your phone number or address need to be made once your application has been submitted, you must submit those changes in writing to 118 North Clark Street, Room 876, Chicago, Illinois 60602 Attention: Examination and Selection Division.

Does the County perform drug testing?
All new employees will be required to submit to a satisfactory drug test and background test.

What is the jurisdiction of job openings posted?
The posted job openings on this site are positions available under the direct jurisdiction of the Office of the President and the Bureaus under the jurisdiction of the President. If you are interested in employment with other County agencies, click here for more information.
