RESOLUTION CALLING FOR NEW PENALTIES FOR POLITICIANS

WHO FAIL TO REPORT CAMPAIGN DISCLOSURES

 

WHEREAS, all candidates campaigning for office have an obligation to release campaign fundraising information in a timely manner; and

 

WHEREAS, elected officials have a responsibility to all taxpayers to disclose accurate and reliable campaign fundraising information; and

 

WHEREAS, promoting campaign fundraising reform that emphasizes transparency and accountability will thwart campaign fraud and enable the voters of Illinois to make informed decisions on Election Day; and

 

WHEREAS, given the current circumstances within the State of Illinois, it is important that current elected officials provide the taxpayers of Illinois assurance that legislators are openly disclosing campaign fundraising information; and

 

WHEREAS, Illinois campaign finance laws have long been ridiculed for lack of oversight and regulation; and

 

WHEREAS, elected officials need to take this opportunity to prove to citizens throughout the State of Illinois, that corruption will not be tolerated; and

 

WHEREAS, the State legislature needs to pass comprehensive finance reform that increases the power of the Illinois Ethics Commission and ensure the independence of the state’s inspector generals; and

 

WHEREAS, the State legislature needs to radically tighten campaign finance laws in an effort to restore confidence in the integrity of this State.

 

 

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Cook County Board of Commissioners, gathered here this 4th 18th day of February, do hereby encourage that the lawmakers in Springfield, Illinois impose stricter penalties on candidates who fail to disclose campaign funding for more than one quarter.
